In a heartfelt announcement that marks the end of an era, Rohit Sharma has officially retired from Test cricket with immediate effect. The 37-year-old batting maestro confirmed that while his journey in the whites has concluded, he will continue to lead India in the One Day International (ODI) format.
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Rohit Sharma said through a social media post on Wednesday evening.
This announcement comes ahead of India’s much-anticipated five-Test series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley, leaving selectors with the immediate task of appointing a new captain.

Rohit Sharma’s Test Legacy
Across a distinguished Test career spanning 67 matches, Rohit Sharma amassed 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. His resume features 12 centuries and 18 fifties, with a career-best knock of 212 against South Africa in Ranchi back in October 2019. While his recent form had wavered, Rohit’s contribution to Indian cricket is undisputed.
BCCI President and former all-rounder Roger Binny lauded Rohit’s influence, stating, “Mr. Rohit Sharma’s impact on Indian cricket transcends records and statistics. His calm leadership and selflessness set a new benchmark. Indian cricket is richer thanks to his professionalism and sportsmanship.”
The Road to Retirement: Recent Struggles and Reflection
Rohit’s decision follows a tough stretch in international cricket. He faced criticism after underwhelming performances in home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand late last year, followed by a dismal tour of Australia where he managed only one fifty and averaged just 10.93 across eight Tests.
India won against Bangladesh but suffered a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of New Zealand and lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 in Australia under Rohit’s captaincy. The Indian skipper missed two matches during the Australian tour — the first to attend the birth of his child and the last in Sydney, where he voluntarily stepped down citing form concerns.
Speaking during a broadcast with Star Sports, Rohit Sharma had candidly shared, “I sat out because runs are not coming. Life in cricket changes every second. I have confidence things can turn around, but I have to be realistic. I’m a mature man and a father of two. I know what I need in life.”
Despite leading India to glory in the ICC Champions Trophy in March, Rohit Sharma seemed to have made peace with stepping away from the longest format.

Future Captaincy and Challenges Ahead
With Rohit Sharma stepping aside, the Indian selectors now face the task of naming his successor before the England series. Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah appears to be a natural choice, but his injury history and the physical toll of Test cricket make it a challenging call. Bumrah, who led in Rohit’s absence during the Australia series, recently recovered from a stress reaction in his lower back and resumed playing in the IPL for Mumbai Indians.
The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will weigh its options carefully, with India’s Test future and leadership structure hanging in the balance.
A New Chapter Begins
As Rohit turns the page on his Test career, Indian cricket fans will remember him not just for his runs but for the calm assurance he brought to the team. His transition away from Tests signals the beginning of a new phase, both for him and for Indian cricket.
