In a major push to improve revenue collection and streamline property documentation, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated a city-wide drive targeting 3.75 lakh property owners who have defaulted on property tax payments. According to Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, these defaulters collectively owe the civic body an estimated ₹700 to ₹800 crore.

Why Is BBMP Cracking Down on Property Tax Defaulters?

At a high-level review meeting held on July 28, Rao emphasized that enhancing property tax collections is currently one of the BBMP’s highest priorities. He directed officials to issue notices via SMS and email to all property owners with pending dues. However, Rao clarified that those who have already cleared their tax obligations need not worry.

“We will be using digital communication to reach defaulters quickly. Property owners with pending dues must act immediately to avoid penalties,” said Rao.

What About New Khata Applications?

Alongside the crackdown on tax defaulters, BBMP is also fast-tracking the processing of over 50,000 new Khata applications that it has received in recent weeks. Rao has asked the revenue department to prioritize approvals, as timely processing of these applications will contribute significantly to the civic body’s tax revenue.
